Computer-Haptic Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery
Resumo
It is becoming increasingly more challenging for orthopaedic surgeons to obtain the crucial skills and craftmanship required to become an experienced practitioner. This has led to the development of virtual surgery training simulators. Although there exist several high-fidelity orthopaedic surgery training simulators in the market today, there is still an unexplored potential for using virtual surgery simulators as a tool in a pre-operative planning. Through the Computer-Haptic Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CHAOS) project, we aim to develop a patient-specific arthroscopic surgery simulator based on the Simulation Open Framework Architecture (SOFA). The proposed workflow is to (i) perform an MRI scan of the patient, (ii) segment the MRI-image into individual anatomy using deep learning techniques, (iii) import patient-specific 3D-anatomy into the simulator, and (iv) let the surgeon practice the specific arthroscopic procedure on the specific patient model before the real surgery. Furthermore, to realistically recreate force-feedback experienced during arthroscopic surgery, we aim to perform surgery force measurement experiments on human specimens. The captured data will be used as a basis for modelling of haptic feedback in the simulator. This presentation describes the status and future plans for development of the CHAOS-simulator.
